The name

Why they call it the Valley of Milk

Doodhpathri sits in the Khansahib tehsil of Budgam district, a wide, sloping meadow ringed by pine forest and, beyond it, the snow line of the Pir Panjal range. Through the middle of the valley runs the Shaliganga stream — locals also call it Doodh Ganga — glacier water that runs pale and chalky over its rock bed, milky enough from a distance that the whole valley took its name from it.

It's smaller and less built-up than Gulmarg or Pahalgam, which is exactly why regular visitors keep returning: fewer buses, a shorter walk to real quiet, and a meadow that still looks like a meadow rather than a market.

Local legend ties the name to the Kashmiri saint Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani, who is said to have struck the dry ground with his staff — and water, then milk, is said to have flowed where he stood.

Current status & practical facts

Distance 42 km

From Srinagar via the Khansahib route. Most visitors treat it as a half-day to full-day trip.

Parking point 2–4 km

Private vehicles stop at a designated parking/toll point; the meadow and riverside are reached on foot, by pony, or by ATV from there.

Facilities Basic

A few tea and snack stalls near the parking area. Carry your own water and snacks — options thin out fast once you walk in.

Rating 4.5 / 5

Across 2,058 Google reviews. Praise centres on the scenery; complaints centre on pony/ATV pricing and litter.

River access changes seasonally. Through 2025 and into 2026, several visitors report the Shaliganga riverfront and the furthest "zero point" have been cordoned off by police or the army at times, for safety and security reasons — while the meadow and drive remain fully open. This status shifts, so check with your driver or a local guide on the day rather than planning your whole visit around reaching the water.

On arrival

Things to do at Doodhpathri

Once you're past the parking point, there are three practical ways to cover the meadow, plus a handful of things worth building time for.

Option 1

Pony / horse ride

The classic way in, usually 2–4 km to the riverside viewpoints. Rates are almost always negotiable — agree the fare, and photograph the horse and handler, before you set off.

Option 2

ATV ride

Faster and bumpier, popular with groups. Confirm the route length upfront — several visitors report drivers quoting a much longer distance than the ride actually covers.

Option 3

Walk in

The path is mostly flat and paved. Many recent visitors skip the pony and ATV entirely and walk it in under two hours, at no cost beyond time.

Also worth it

Photography & picnics

Wide open meadow light, grazing sheep, and pine-forest backdrops. Bring a groundsheet and pack out everything you bring in — littering is the most repeated complaint about the site.

Winter only

Snow walks & sledging

From December to February the whole meadow is often under a thick, even blanket of snow — a different, quieter version of the same valley, good for snow play and long-lens photography.

Along the way

Local food stops

Roadside stalls near the meadow serve kahwah, tea, maggi, and corn on the cob. A few dhabas en route are known for makki di roti and saag — worth the stop either direction.

Getting there

Srinagar to Doodhpathri

  1. Start from Srinagar

By private taxi or your own vehicle — there's no direct public bus route, so most visitors arrange a car for the day.

  2. Route via Khansahib / Budgam

The road is in good condition for most of the drive; the final stretch narrows and climbs, so an early start helps avoid the midday jam at the parking point.

  3. Park at the designated point

Private vehicles stop here; a per-vehicle toll usually applies. This is also where pony and ATV operators are based.

  4. Cover the last stretch

On foot, pony, or ATV, depending on how far you want to go and how much time you have — see "Things to do" above.

Tips from travellers who've been

1

Agree the price before you move. For both pony and ATV rides, settle the rate — and ideally check it against the posted government rate board at the parking point — before you set off, not after.

2

Confirm the distance, not just the price. Ask exactly which points are included in the ride. A few operators quote a longer route than they actually cover.

3

Go early. Arriving in the morning means lighter traffic on the drive up, easier parking, and cooler conditions for the walk in.

4

Carry water and snacks. Facilities thin out past the parking point, and prices at the few stalls that exist run higher than in town.

5

Pack out your rubbish. Litter is the most common complaint in recent reviews — carry a bag for your own waste.

6

Don't force a car through unpaved patches. If you're driving yourself, ask locally about the current road condition before pushing a large vehicle up the final stretch.

What visitors say

2,058 Google reviews, one theme

4.5 ★★★★★ based on 2,058 Google reviews

Nearly every review opens the same way: the meadow and mountain backdrop exceed expectations, and it feels calmer than Kashmir's more famous hill stations.

Recurring theme — scenery

The most common frustration is being pressured into a pony or ATV ride at a first-quoted price well above what a short bargaining conversation gets you to.

Recurring theme — pricing

Several 2026 visits mention the riverside viewpoint being temporarily closed, with the open meadow and drive still rated as worth the trip on their own.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

How far is Doodhpathri from Srinagar?

About 40–43 km, roughly 2 to 3.5 hours by road depending on traffic, the season, and the exact route through Budgam.

What does "Doodhpathri" mean?

"Valley of Milk." The Shaliganga stream that runs through the meadow flows pale and chalky over its rocky bed, and local legend also links the name to the Kashmiri saint Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani.

Is the river open right now?

It varies. Through recent seasons, access to the Shaliganga riverfront has been restricted at times for safety and security reasons, even while the meadow and drive stay open. Confirm locally on the day of your visit.

How much should a pony or ATV ride cost?

Opening quotes are usually inflated. Most visitors who bargain report settling near half the first price or less. Check the rate board at the parking point if one is posted.

Is Doodhpathri better than Gulmarg or Pahalgam?

It's a different kind of visit — smaller, less commercial, and quieter, with fewer built-up facilities. Most travellers treat it as a peaceful add-on to a Kashmir itinerary rather than a replacement for Gulmarg or Pahalgam.

Can I visit as a day trip from Srinagar?

Yes — it's commonly done as a half-day to full-day round trip from Srinagar, and is close enough to combine with other stops in Budgam district if you start early.
